A roaming Blues traveller...
Julien D'Imperio a.k.a JD Harmo, is a south-London based Blues singer and harmonica player who performs with guitar accompaniment.
Occasionally, he also fronts a larger combo of musicians as a trio, or with a 4 piece band JD and the Electro-tones.
Julien hails originally from Bordeaux, South of France and has been residing in London for over 15 years.
He picked up the harmonica at about the age of 18, when his father, a keen Folk and Delta Blues fan, took him to a local music store to pick up his first harmonica.
JD initially studied the harp work of artists Billy Branch, James Cotton, Norton Buffalo, later tuning into Kim Wilson, William Clarke and Gary Primich, he eventually worked his way backwards to the originators of amplified post-war Blues Harmonica: Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson II and Big Walter. These probably remaining his main playing style influences today.
In the late 90’s, Julien was fortunate to live in Austin-Texas, working at the prestigious Antone’s record label as an intern by day and a musician by night, building his harp chops, hanging around and eventually sharing the stage to jam with some great Texas based Blues names: Mike Buck, Mike Keller and the Moeller Brothers (Fabulous Thunderbirds), a young Gary Clarke Junior, late Clarence Holloman (guitarist for Bobby Blue Bland in 1960). He got to hang out with Gary Primich for a couple of impromptu harmonica lessons.
When arriving to London in 2003, he headed straight to the famed Ain’t Nothing But "blues bar" in London, to listen to Big Joe Louis and West Weston and the Bluesonics (having seen them in Cognac Blues festival- France a couple of years prior).
Today Julien works with the UK’s finest advocates of traditional electric Blues in London, one of the UK's hottest zones of top Blues musicianship. And at still a fairly young age, he has received praise for his deep-tones, expressive harmonica sound, often reminiscent of Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson, yet mixed with influences of the modern harp players.
With the year 2019 closing, an exciting new UK collaboration commences with singer/ guitarist and songwriter Jo' Buddy.
His music is a rich and spicy gumbo of Swamp Boogie, Down Home Blues, Surf and Garage Rock, Jump Blues, Zydeco, Gospel, Soul, Gospel, Swing... "Nobody sounds like Jo'Buddy"
His live repertoire is completely original and unique to him.
Jo' has played with many international greats such as Big Jay McNeely, Lazy Lester, Eddy Clearwater, Louisiana Red, Junior Watson, Kim Wilson, and a endless list of many more world-class artists.
JD and Jo' kicked things off by busking in the soho streets of London this year and shall be seen sharing the stage in 2020 ... no doubt about it!
Davide Mazzantini and "Lightnin' Lewis"
Sidekick guitar players, Davide Mazzantini (Little George Sueref) and Lightnin' Lewis (Big Joe Louis) side with JD for shows. London's top players for old school Blues...
Little Victor, aka the Beale street Blues Bopper is a multi-award winning performer and producer. He has been a most popular international festival attraction for decades and has worked in the studio with top names: Kim Wilson, Hubert Sumlin, and especially Louisiana Red with whom he had a long -time collaboration.
In his young 20's, Julien saw Victor's show at Cognac Blues festival (20 years ago!). 15 years later, he stumbled on Victor on Facebook, called him up on the telephone ... and there started a new music friendship.
Dexter Shaw and the Wolf-Tones...
JD has had the pleasure of blowing harmonica on a few occasions with signed Rhythm Bomb records artist and guitar ace, Dexter Shaw and his band of 50's Blues and Roots.
